Not long after I left academia, someone said to me:
“Oh… so you’re selling out.”
I smiled. Because I knew what they meant — and I also knew they were dead wrong.
Let’s get one thing straight:
I didn’t “sell out.”
I cashed in on my own potential. 💥
In academia, I spent years deep-diving into theory, crafting papers that a handful of experts might read, and chasing funding like it was a full-time sport. I loved the pursuit of knowledge — but let’s not romanticize the grind.
The system was broken in ways people don’t talk about.
Endless peer reviews with no feedback loop.
Burnout dressed up as “passion.”
Metrics that rewarded publication over real-world impact.
And let’s be honest — a paycheck that barely acknowledged our worth.
While I was being paid $25K/year to chase grants and publish papers barely anyone read, my friends with Master's degrees were earning 6 figures, building real-world products, and having weekends.
And that’s not a dig at academia. It’s a reality check.
📊 Take a look at this salary comparison.
8 years in academia vs 8 years in the industry — same timeline, wildly different outcomes. The comparison is based on the German salaries with four year of PhD.
So I made the jump.
I joined the industry.
I stepped into a world where my models get deployed, where my work drives decisions, where data meets impact — fast.
Now I collaborate with engineers, designers, product leaders.
I see my insights influence strategies that touch thousands, sometimes millions of people.
And guess what? I still learn. Every. Single. Day.
Only now, I’m learning with purpose — and with a direct line to results. 🚀
If you think the industry is where curiosity goes to die, you’ve never worked on building a model with actual consequences.
If you think business decisions are less “pure” than academic ones, try shipping a solution that balances user experience, ethical AI, data quality, and time-to-market.
It's not selling out.
It's leveling up. 💼⚡
So yeah, call it what you want.
But if investing in myself, doing impactful work, growing my skills, getting paid fairly, and actually having evenings free is “selling out” — then I guess I’m guilty.
And I’m not just surviving.
I’m thriving.
🔥 No regrets. Just results.
